It can be hard to be a leader.

The US General Douglas MacArthur who said, “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others.”

In healthcare, there aren’t many good examples of this kind of leadership when it comes to price transparency.

People want affordable healthcare, and without clear and easy to understand prices, the economic principles of competition can’t lower prices. And because of that, healthcare costs continue to climb higher and higher.

But there are some who have chosen to step up and be leaders in this space, by making their prices transparent and easy to understand.

We’ve highlighted our favorites in this article, and outline what makes them incredible leaders. So without further ado, let’s dive in!

Surgery Center of Oklahoma

As the premier pioneer of price transparency, this surgery center in central Oklahoma has set the standard for affordable, transparent prices since 1998.

As you can see in this screen shot of their website, they have an interactive and simple way to understand their prices.

You click on the body part you need surgery for, select the specific procedure, and it gives you price. Super simple and easy to understand.

For their history of leadership and example of price transparency, they earn the number 1 spot on our list.

 Mayo Clinic

In a time when many healthcare organizations would prefer to hide their chargemasters, and bury their prices somewhere on their website, the Mayo Clinic stands as a positive deviant from that trend.

And when the Mayo Clinic does something to better help their patients, the world should take note.

But not everyone knows about their price transparency tool. And that’s a shame, because it’s a really good one.

You can even figure out the cost of your procedure with Medicare or Medicaid, with your insurance, or with just a cash payment.

The Mayo Clinic is rightly seen as a leader of exceptional healthcare the world over, and they have brought that same drive and passion when it comes to making their prices transparent and easy to understand.

They may not be as affordable as other healthcare providers, but they do a wonderful job of showcasing the prices of their world-renowned healthcare:

Walmart Health

Walmart took the healthcare world by storm when they opened their first clinic in Georgia last year.

They offer convenient, actually affordable healthcare including services ranging from annual checkups to dental work to mental health therapy and much more. Their prices are also transparent and easy to understand. For example, $1 a minute to talk with a therapist, $4 medications, and a $30 chest x-ray, to name a few. Walmart has created a great program and strategy, and it will be exciting to watch them scale and continue to bring affordable, transparent health care to patients.

Part of the reason why Walmart Health can offer these low prices is that they don’t have to worry about most of the costs that traditional healthcare providers have. For example, they already own the real estate for most of their clinics because they’re inside the existing Walmart stores, they use mid-level providers like nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and they have a very flat leadership hierarchy, with few administrators.
